The condenser coil is the outdoor heat exchanger in your AC or heat pump. High-pressure, high-temperature refrigerant vapor enters the coil, releases its heat to outdoor air being pulled through it by the condenser fan, and condenses back into a liquid before returning to the indoor evaporator coil.
The condenser coil is made of copper tubing with aluminum fins for surface area. In coastal SC, salt-air chloride attacks the aluminum fins — clogged or corroded fins reduce heat exchange and force the compressor to work harder.
Coastal-spec equipment uses fin coatings (E-coat, Bronz-Glow, blue-fin) that resist salt attack. Standard equipment can have its life extended with regular fresh-water rinses and twice-yearly professional cleanings.
