An HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator) is a balanced ventilation device similar to an ERV but exchanges only heat between incoming and outgoing air streams — not moisture.
HRVs are common in cold dry climates (the northern U.S. and Canada), where indoor humidity is often higher than outdoor humidity in winter and you actually want to vent that moisture out.
In Charleston, an HRV would let humid summer air in without conditioning the moisture out — usually the wrong direction. For our climate, ERVs are nearly always the right choice for whole-home ventilation.
