A packaged unit combines all HVAC components — compressor, condenser coil, evaporator coil, and blower — in a single outdoor cabinet. Conditioned air is ducted directly from the cabinet into the structure through a roof or wall penetration.
Packaged units are the dominant configuration for commercial buildings (rooftop units, or RTUs) and for residential homes where indoor mechanical room space is limited — manufactured homes, additions, or homes with crawlspaces too tight for split-system air handlers.
Available as packaged AC, packaged heat pump, or packaged gas/electric (heat pump cooling + gas furnace heating in one cabinet).
