R-410A (trade name Puron, among others) is the hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant used in nearly all residential AC and heat pump systems installed in the U.S. between roughly 2010 and 2024. It replaced R-22 (ozone-depleting) when R-22 was phased out under the Montreal Protocol.
R-410A itself has a high Global Warming Potential (GWP ≈ 2,088), so the EPA AIM Act mandates a phasedown. Starting January 1, 2025, manufacturers can no longer produce new residential AC or heat pump systems with R-410A — new systems must use R-454B, R-32, or other lower-GWP refrigerants.
Existing R-410A systems are NOT illegal. They can continue to operate and be serviced indefinitely. R-410A refrigerant is still available for service work, though supply is dropping and prices are climbing.
