Return Air

The path air takes back to the air handler — undersized returns are the #1 hidden cause of comfort complaints in older Charleston homes.

"Return air" refers to the path room air takes back to the air handler to be re-conditioned. Most homes have a small number of large return grilles (sometimes just one, in a central hallway) connected to the air handler via a return duct.

Undersized or restricted returns are the most common hidden problem in older Charleston homes. Symptoms include doors that get pulled toward registers when the system runs, whistling at the return grille, high static pressure, hot/cold spots in rooms with closed doors, and short equipment life.

The fix is usually adding a second return — installing a new grille and ducting it back to the air handler. It's not glamorous work, but it often delivers more comfort improvement per dollar than any equipment upgrade.
